"Wa tawaa ssaubil haq" & about hadith

Attended a kuliah yesterday by Ustaz Hafiizh Rapiee, and he brought up a sensitive issue on tahlil on every malam Jumaat, lepas maghrib. He wanted to move it to lepas isya' - which is out of the norm for our people (the Malays). The mosque's board had unanimously agreed that the timing of the tahlil will be swopped with the kuliah on tafsir Quran, which he felt was more important. He went on to explain that there is no sunnah saying tahlil must be done after maghrib, malam jumaat. In fact the steps in the weekly event, like what comes after what, and including the part on sedekah kan to those who passed away, as being done so religiously by our people, IS NOT part of our beloved Rasulullah's SAW sunnah.

He said a few things that struck a chord with me. One of them is when he told the jema'ah to approach him if they had any doubts or if they wanted to feedback. He will accept feedbacks with reasonable arguments. Dia pun cakap, not to be afraid to approach him, dia tak makan orang - good, now that's clear =D. But he told the jema'ah not to give the reason that 'ini kan bapak kita, datuk kita dah buat dari dulu'. This is exactly the reason given by the kafiruns, when asked not to sembah berhala. I've been given the same reason before, and I shudder when I also remembered this ayat.

"When it is said to them: "Follow what Allah hath revealed:" They say: "Nay! we shall follow the ways of our fathers." What! even though their fathers Were void of wisdom and guidance?"
Al Baqarah 2:170

Information is in abundance now, what with the books, and the classes and the internet. And we are generally literate people (of course u are, if u're reading this), I feel strongly that we shouldn't just take what someone says as 'the truth' for granted, especially when macam tak kena gitu. Unless you're sure of the source. No matter how pious the person seems to be. And it is important to realise that all hukum hakam, comes from 2 main sources - the Quran and the Hadith. From there the other derivations like ijma', qias and what have you - but they all go back to refer to these 2 main sources.

And we have to be very careful with hadith. We shouldn't say something to be from Rasulullah SAW, when it's not. So even when WE go and relate a hadith, claimed to be from Rasulullah SAW - YOU better be sure. You don't happily relate it to other people like nobody's business (macam forward those emails yang ada 'Rasulullah SAW bersabda... or Allah SWT says...' think first before you hit that 'Forward' button - u sure or not???).

Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Amr: The Prophet said, "Convey (my teachings) to the people even if it were a single sentence, and tell others the stories of Bani Israel (which have been taught to you), for it is not sinful to do so. And whoever tells a lie on me intentionally, will surely take his place in the (Hell) Fire."
Sahih Bukhari, Volume 4, Book 56, Number 667

And, there lies the beauty and intelligence in Islam's methodology. The ulamas from previous times, have taken pains to ensure what is hadith sohih (authentic) and what's not. The steps to determine that a hadith is sohih includes that the chains of the hadith narrators be KNOWN and is continuous (i.e. you know exactly who passed this hadith to whom, and then he passes to whom etc..). Then, ALL the narrators must be of VERY high integrity. He/She must NOT be known to be forgetful - even on a single phrase - or of having bad morales. What is considered bad? If a person offers a container to an animal, making it think that there's something inside, to get it to move somewhere - that's BAD.

"Ok," u say.." then HOW in the world can I tell all this ah?? mana ada time nak check ni semua??" Tulah dia I said, the ulamas have taken pains to check all these for us. For people like us - we can refer to Sohih Bukhari and Sohih Muslim for a start. Or if someone relates a hadith to you, try ask nicely, "Eerr.. where can I refer to, for this hadith?"

Wallahu'alam.
